Hampstead was one of the ancient manors of Littlehempston. It is strategically placed at the south end of the parish, near the confluence of the rivers Hems and Dart.

For most of the 19th century a branch of the large Shinner family farmed Hampstead. By 1881 the Helms family were in residence, and in 1901 Samuel Bearne and his family were living there.
Hampstead was part of the Littlehempston land sold off by the Duke of Bolton in the early 1920s.
The house is now divided into two, and the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm is run from one part.
