Here’s a great event to celebrate and show solidarity for International Women’s Day (IWD).
Holding Up The Sky is a documentary directed by Russ Pariseau, who will show the film and explain a little of the background. It’s about 7 Nepali women and 3 African “sisters” who climb Kilimanjaro on International Women’s Day 2013. The mission of the climb was to call attention to the challenges girls and young women face growing up in traditional patriarchal societies of the developing world. The physical challenges of the Kilimanjaro climb parallel the individual stories each woman relates about overcoming cultutal gender barriers growing up. International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
This event supports both the Community Space and the charity Womankind who work at local, regional and international levels to ensure women’s voices are heard, their rights are realised, and their lives are free from violence. Entry £3 and there’ll be a bar and light refreshments. Please eat lots of cake in aid of Womankind!
