Littlehempston has enjoyed two excellent talks with supper in the Community Space recently. At the end of April, Partnerships in Gardening provided an evening of good food and interesting gardening chat with Aaron Southgate, Head Gardener at Buckfast Abbey, who had lots of advice on the value of good soil and working with the many creatures that create a healthy balance. And it was lovely to welcome people from other parishes. A donation of £102 was given to support the Buckfast Abbey gardens and a further £260 to support Space activities.
“A superb evening” was how one person described the evening in May, when Martin Palmer, church historian and regular contributor to the BBC, gave a fascinating and sometimes provocative talk, Our Church Through Time, about what our church building reveals about the local landscape and society through the ages. He led everyone round both the outside and inside of the church, pointing out features such as masons’ marks on the columns, and carvings over the door, and using the beautiful poetry of Jay Ramsay to illustrate his ideas. There was much enthusiastic discussion afterwards and all went home well satisfied, both with the delicious sausage casserole and the quality of debate. And £224 was raised into the bargain.
