Donna and Phil from the Pig & Whistle have been getting together with Lawrence Joiner to plan an exciting Bonfire Night celebration on Tuesday November 5th. They are proposing to run a BBQ while Lawrence and friends have kindly volunteered to help with the fireworks. The Pig is donating £200 worth of fireworks for the occasion and are proposing to ask the whole parish if they would contribute some fireworks for the display – Lawrence will set them all off together (well, not exactly, we hope).  Donna and Phil really hope the parish will come together and contribute to make this a really fun event for everyone.  If you’d like to contribute, please contact the Pig & Whistle on 01803 863733 by the 24th October, as your support is vital for this event to proceed.

Eight local ladies recently enjoyed a visit to Poltimore House near Exeter, courtesy of a lot bought by Val Hoare at the Auction of Promises earlier in the year. Claire Donovan, who’s heavily involved in the project, gave a detailed guided tour, making it a fascinating lesson in history and architecture. The restoration work is a massive project that will last many years, but will eventually provide an insight into the building skills of several centuries and will be a superb resource for future generations. The group was also treated to tea and cakes – superbly cooked by Shelley. All agreed that it was a lovely afternoon and Val recommends you have a look at the Poltimore events calendar at www.poltimore.org and go along and see it for yourselves.

The French supper was voted a hit by all present. Following a gentle game of boules in the warm evening sun over a glass of wine (ah .. such memories), a sumptious meal prepared by talented local chefs and wine supplied by our resident sommelier (or Colin as he is sometimes known) was enjoyed by all.

Stripey jumpers and black berets abounded, French music filled the air and some even went home with more than they bargained for after winning a prize in the raffle, admirably organised by James with superb French translation from Jill for those of us who couldn’t understand English anymore. Many thanks to all who helped organise this, especially Lesley. Not only was it magnifique – we also raised £360 !
