Wet but not a Washout

Posted on Published

All agreed that despite the rain, Littlehempston Fete provided enough Midsummer Madness to keep everyone of all ages amused. Most of the parish turned out to man the stalls and side shows, the Mad Obstacle course and Pony Rides proved a big hit with the younger ones and Elfic the Jester had everybody rolling amongst the hay bales. The Mad Hatters Bar and delicious Hog Roast from the BBQ did a brisk trade, whilst Hogwash played music that everybody could jig to and keep warm. The Maypole Team from Berry Pomeroy School were superb.

Many thanks to everybody who pitched in and worked so hard to make this event a success. A special thanks to Donna and Phil from the Pig & Whistle who helped enormously with providing advice and support for the Mad Hatter Bar and also lent us the hog roast machine, which turned out to be a big success.

Provisional figures show that around £2,100 was raised, which will go towards supporting Rowcroft Hospice, Berry Pomeroy School and Littlehempston Church and Community Space. More pictures in the gallery.

Fete Team Needs Muscle

Can you spare an hour or two to help collect and carry things for the village fete?  On the afternoon of Saturday 8th June, the Fete Team will be touring the village collecting donations and though the spirit is very willing, there is a lot of weak flesh about (not to mention bad backs). So if you could lend a hand carrying stuff from doorsteps to car that would be so welcome – it’s a perfect job to do with the kids. And again on either Thursday 20th or Friday 21st, your help would be much appreciated to move chairs and tables to the fete site. The Fete Team love organising the fete – it’s just all that carrying some of us are not so good at anymore. And then it’s all hands on deck to set the site up on Friday 21st. If you can help in any way, please contact Sue Wellum or phone her on 01803 863088.

It’s shaping up to be a really exciting fete this year with all the old favourites and some great new additions. See you there!

What a Show of Hands!

A merry evening was had by all at the Auction of Promises on Saturday 25th May, where the excellent cheeses, good wine and slick auctioneering from Piers Whiting of Luscombe May put everybody in good humour to bid for the 25 lots on offer. There was fierce bidding over the likes of loads of logs, massage, riding lessons, garden benches and horse manure, and everybody came away well pleased with their lot. It was also a good opportunity to meet up with people who had moved to the village recently.

A big thank you to all those who donated their time or skills so generously and also to all who volunteered to help. And well done James Drummond and Viv Whybrow who organised this excellent event. Well over £1,000 was raised, which will be put towards creating an interior porch for the church to improve insulation. Let’s have lots more!
